Mission
To identify and address vital
environmental issues through avian medicine, educational, research and
conservation initiatives.
Dedicated to the study and welfare of birds and
their habitats
With
ties to the likes of Audubon, Catesby and Bachman, South Carolina
enjoys a long and important legacy in the study and appreciation of
birds. That legacy endures through the Avian Conservation Center and,
within it, the Center for Birds of Prey. Ideally situated
on a 150-acre campus near Charleston, South Carolina, the Centers are
dedicated to the study and welfare of birds and their habitats
and to engaging the public in important environmental issues that
affect birds and humans alike.
Operating
365 days a year with support from more than 80 trained and dedicated
volunteer staff members, the Center’s medical clinic treats
nearly
400 injured birds of prey each year. In partnership with the U.S. Fish
& Wildlife Service and the S.C. Department of Natural
Resources,
the Center has recently established a combined use Avian Medical Center
/ Oiled Bird Treatment Facility that will serve a substantial portion
of the East Coast in the event of an oil spill affecting native bird
populations and their fragile breeding habitats.
