While the free-flight demonstration captures every eye, the questions it inspires reveal the experience’s deeper impact. Why can an eagle see so far? How do birds survive powerful storms? What happens when a raptor is injured? Those conversations become an engaging introduction to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—not simply as classroom subjects, but as tools for understanding the natural world. Through observation, critical thinking, and discussion, students begin to think like scientists while discovering how birds help tell the story of healthy ecosystems.
During a recent visit from Coastal Expeditions Camp, one young camper’s fascination with hawks quickly became something more. After asking how the Harris’s Hawk in the demonstration differed from the birds he had seen near home, he began wondering why hawks are so often found near roads and what people could do to keep them safe. The conversation led to a simple but important lesson: food and litter tossed from vehicles can attract prey to roadsides, placing hunting raptors in danger. He left determined to share that message with his classmates and friends. The impact of the moment was not lost on Drew Maile, MS MWFR, a member of the Center’s Education staff. “It was rewarding to watch his curiosity about hawks turn into a determination to share what he had learned and help protect them,” said Maile.
Not every child who visits the Avian Conservation Center will grow up to become a wildlife biologist, veterinarian, or conservation scientist—and that is not the goal. Every child, however, will become someone whose choices influence the future of our natural world. By inspiring curiosity today, the Center helps build a generation of thoughtful citizens who better understand the connections among wildlife, people, and the environment we all share. Long after the memory of a falcon’s breathtaking dive or an owl’s silent flight begins to fade, the questions those moments inspired—and the determination to protect a favorite hawk—may continue shaping how these young learners see and care for the world around them.
